東日本で大震災が起きた日の夜、地震の規模があまりにも大きいことに驚いたとともに、たまたま車のiPodから流れたこの曲が頭の中で何度も何度も流れました。
その日は、この瞬間もがれきの中で埋もれたまま寒い夜を迎えた人がいるのではないか？津波にさらわれたまま、寒い海で何かにしがみついて耐えている人がいるのではないかと思い、その人たちが無事に救助されることを祈りました。
この曲の中の歌詞にあるように「空を飛ぶくらい速いファスト・カー」で、目の前の過酷な現実から抜け出すことできれば、どんなに素晴らしいだろうかと思いながら祈りました。
１９８８年にリリースされた1stアルバム『トレイシー・チャップマン』からの大ヒット曲です。
この曲がヒットした当時、まだ高校生だった私にとってこの曲はまだまだ理解できませんでした。この曲の意味を本当の意味で共感できるようになったのは、そのもう少し後だったかもしれません。特にこの曲のサビでの「生まれ変われる気がした」という部分について、震えるほどに共感してしまいます。
